About Us
Sycamore Fire Department (SFD) provides 24-hour emergency responses including, fire suppression, rescue, emergency medical services (EMS), hazardous materials, fire prevention, and public education, serving a population of approximately 20,000 residents. Our service area covers 62.54 square miles:
- City of Sycamore (9.74 square miles) with 18,577 residents and
- Sycamore Fire Protection District, unincorporated area (52.8 square miles) with 2,500 residents, approximately.
The Insurance Services Organization (ISO) rating for property within the City of Sycamore is Class 4. For property located outside the City yet within the Sycamore Fire Protection District, the ISO rating is Class 4Y.
Staffing
Operating out of two fire stations, SFD is divided into two divisions:
- Administration: one Fire Chief, one Deputy Fire Chief, and an Office Manager who work 40 hours weekly.
- Operations: 30 full-time firefighters whose shifts are typically 24 hours on duty followed by 48 hours off duty. Nine personnel are assigned to each regular shift, and three personnel are on the "swing" shift.
Daily minimum shift staffing is seven full-time firefighters, including one Battalion Chief, two Lieutenants, and four Firefighter-Paramedics.
During 2024, the Fire Department responded to 2,996 incidents, 84% of which were EMS calls. For more information about the Fire Department, please refer to the Fire Department's 2024 Annual Report.

- How do I obtain a copy of my ambulance medical report?

Medical information by law is confidential. If the person requesting the report is the patient or the parent or legal guardian of the patient, a report may be given in person provided proper documentation is submitted. Requests are processed at the Administrative Offices at Fire Station 1 during normal business hours. If picking up the report in person, please call ahead at 815-895-4514 with your request, so that the report will be ready when you arrive at the fire station.

Property owners may obtain a copy of their report with proper photo identification. Fire report requests made by individuals other than the property owner, should complete a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) form and submit to the City Clerk’s office. Property owner or occupant requests are processed at the Administrative Offices at Fire Station 1 during normal business hours. If picking up the report in person, please call ahead at 815-895-4514 with your request, so that the report will be ready when you arrive at the fire station.
- What are your charges for ambulance service?

An ambulance service fee, based upon the annual Ground Emergency Medical Transportation (GEMT) Cost Report calculation, is charged to patients receiving all levels of care who are transported by ambulance to Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital. This fee is the same for City of Sycamore residents, Sycamore Fire Protection District residents, and non-residents.
Additionally, a Transfer fee is assessed for mileage, as measured from point of patient pickup to hospital destination. Residents of the City of Sycamore and Sycamore Fire Protection District are charged $13 per loaded mile. Non-residents are charged $14 per loaded mile.
The "Treat, No Transport Fee" is $200, when a patient does not require transportation to the hospital, but treatment or service is necessary and provided.
